Tuesday, September 13, 2016, sees Apple release iOS 10, the latest version of its mobile operating system. The software update for users of the firm's current compatible devices lands a few days ahead of the official release of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

This latest update is one of the richest in new features in the history of iOS. Notable additions include a Raise to Wake function that wakes up the iPhone screen (iPhone 6 onwards) when the handset is picked up for quick, easy access to notifications, for example. Plus, widgets previously kept in the Notification Center are now accessible via the Lock screen, by swiping to the left. Swipe the other way to quickly pull up the camera from the Lock screen.

Messages, the most frequently used app in the iOS suite, has been enriched with a selection of animated gifs and stickers to collect and swap for customizing messages. Apple has also added an Invisible Ink feature to send messages or photos that users swipe to reveal.

The updated Photos app can group pictures in dedicated Memories folders, organized by theme or by particular events. The snaps can then be used to create movies. Photos can also be searched by person or subject, such as a place or a specific event. Apple Music has been refreshed and streamlined with a more intuitive interface. You can even view song lyrics while you listen.

The Home application is designed to facilitate home automation, so users with compatible accessories can turn on lights or raise shades directly from their phone. It works with all automated home accessories compatible with Apple's HomeKit system, turning your mobile into a smart universal remote with voice controls. The Maps app has had a facelift too. As well as getting a new design, the app can now suggest routes based on user habits.

Finally, Siri's scope of action has been broadened to include all the apps on your phone. Once apps have been made compatible by developers, Apple's intelligent personal assistant will be able to book a hotel room or rent a car, for example, through a third-party app.

iOS 10 is compatible with the iPhone 5 and all later models of Apple smartphone, as well as with all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the fourth-gen iPad, the iPad mini 2 and later models, and the sixth-gen iPod touch.
