Super-popular mobile game Pokemon Go will soon introduce advertising via “sponsored location” which would reportedly provide “a new revenue stream, in addition to in-app purchases of power-ups and virtual items.”

In conversation with Financial Times, Chief Executive of Niantic John Hanke says, “There is a second component to our business model at Niantic, which is this concept of sponsored locations where companies “pay us to be locations within the virtual game board — the premise being that it is an inducement that drives foot traffic.”

The company currently offers sponsored locations in Ingress, its last popular augmented reality game. For the new game, advertisers will be charged for every customer visiting a store. Brands including pharmacy Duane Reade, café chain Jamba Juice and car-rental service Zipcar have already paid to create Ingress portals in the US. The report points out that in Japan, where Ingress is particularly popular, Lawson convenience stores and Tokyo Mitsubishi Bank paid for similar in-game promotions as well.

For the last week, news has been rushing in about how Pokemon Go is now more popular than one thing or another. The new augmented reality smartphone game from Nintendo and Niantic managed to beat Tinder’s draw in a single day. But now, the craze has finally hit the pinnacle of its achievements.

Pokemon Go beat porn. That’s right, more people are currently interacting with digital pets on their smartphone than getting off in the privacy of their rooms. The porn company tweeted to Nintendo, congratulating them on more people searching Pokemon Go terms on Google this past week, than they were pornographic content. They even sent in the customary gym badge, received for beating a gym leader in the game series.
