MWC 2017: What smartphones to expect from Samsung, LG, Nokia, Huawei and more!

One of the most highly-anticipated tech events for Android fans begins February 27.

If you plan to buy a new smartphone this year, just wait till Monday. While CES did not focus on smartphones, MWC (Mobile World Congress) will see some major announcements by some of the best smartphone manufactures in the world. The event will take place in Barcelona, Spain between February 27 and March 2.

1. Samsung

Even though Samsung does not have any plans to show off the Galaxy S8 at the event, the company will showcase the Galaxy Tab S3. It’s been quite a while since Samsung released an Android tablet, under the ‘Galaxy S’ brand. The Galaxy Tab S2 was launched way back in 2015.

Recently, a GFXBench benchmark readout specifications for the version number SM-T825. The device is said to sport a 9.6-inch display with a 2048 x 1535 pixel resolution. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 820 CPU which will be paired with 4GB of RAM. The device will most likely include an internal storage of 32GB, and will come equipped with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing camera. It is also expected to come in two variants - LTE and Wi-Fi. Additionally, the Galaxy Tab S3 will somehow be even thinner than its 5.6mm predecessor. It will run Android 7.0 Nougat. It is rumoured to be priced at roughly $607 (approximately Rs 41,000). The tablet has also passed through the FCC.

2. LG

LG is expected to unveil the G6 smartphone during Mobile World Congress. In terms of rumoured specifications, the G6 should sport a5.7-inch display with a 2880x1440 pixel resolution and will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 SoC.

3. Nokia

Nokia might just be the highlight of Mobile World Congress. The company is expected to unveil two new smartphones - Nokia 5 and Nokia 3. Additionally, we might get to witness the glorious comeback of the Nokia 3310. According to speculations, this phone will be priced at €59 (approximately Rs 4,194) a price that fully gels with the nostalgia. Apart from this, the company is also rumored to introduce a few health-related devices at MWC.  

4. Motorola

Motorola, on the other hand, is expected to show off new smartphones - Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus. According to the rumour mill, Moto G5 is expected to feature a 5-inch FHD display. It will be powered by a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor paired with 2GB of RAM. It will include an internal storage of 32GB which can be further expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. There is no information if the company will offer two variants though. Running the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, it will come equipped with a 13MP rear camera along with a 5MP front facing camera. Lastly, it will be backed by a 2800mAh battery.

On the other hand, the larger Moto G5 Plus will most likely feature a 5.2-inch FHD display. It will be powered by a 2.0GHz Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, which will be paired with 2GB of RAM. It will include an internal storage of 64GB which can be further expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. Running Android 7.0 Nougat, the device will pack in a 12MP rear dual autofocus camera along with a 5MP front facing camera. The smartphone is rumoured to be backed by a 3000mAh battery along with TurboPower charging technology.

5. Sony

Sony is gearing up to launch its flagship, X2 smartphone at Mobile World Congress. In terms of rumoured specifications, the device is expected to feature a Snapdragon 650 processor, paired with 4GB RAM. There’s another unnamed device by Sony which may be unveiled during the conference which could sport a MediaTek’s P25 SoC.

6. Gionee

Gionee sent out invites for the launch of the A1 and A1 Plus smartphones. The Gionee A1 has already been leaked in live images and has been spotted in benchmark listings as well. It reveals that the device will most likely feature a 5.5-inch FHD display along with 4GB of RAM and an internal storage of 64GB.

7. BlackBerry

TCL will introduce a new BlackBerry smartphone – Mercury, which will be an in-house device. O nthe rumour front, the device is rumoured to have a fingerprint scanner integrated into the QWERTY spacebar. It’s expected to feature a Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, a 4.5-inch display along with an 18MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera.

In terms of design, leaked photos show-off a new smartphone, very similar in to BlackBerry’s last offering, the Priv. However, the Qwerty keyboard here is affixed below the display, instead of sliding out from beneath. In addition, it also feature hard menu buttons instead of the Priv’s soft keys.

8. Huawei

Huawei will most likely take the wraps of three new devices – P10, P10 Plus and a smartwatch - during Mobile World Congress. There are numerous leaks regarding both smartphones. The P10 is expected to sport a 5-inch display with a 1440x2560 resolution while the P10 Plus sports a 5.5-inch curved display with a 1440x2560 resolution. They will be powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 960 chip. Two variants will be available namely - 4GB RAM/64GB and 6GB RAM/128GB. Running Android 7.0 Nougat, the smartphones will come equipped with Leica dual-lens rear cameras.

9. Oppo

During MWC, Oppo is gearing up to introduce the 5X smartphone photography technology. It is said to give users ‘unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images.’ In the past, Oppo launched the VOOC Flash Charge, which was improved at Mobile World Congress last year.

10. HTC

HTC is expected to launch a new One X smartphone during the event. Apart from this, the company might introduce a HTC Vive headset.
