During the Reliance Infocomm Limited press conference today, chairman Mukesh Ambani appeared to pull out all the stops, throwing down the gauntlet to every other cellular service provider in the country.

He started his address by stating that the Jio service had garnered over 100 million customers within 170 days of its launch. He then went on to saying that the Happy New Year offer that offered free 4G data (1GB per day beyond which bandwidth reduces to 128Kbps) until 31 March 2017 has been met with with an enthusiastic response and reiterated that Jio customers will continue to enjoy free domestic voice calls across all networks, with no roaming charges, no blackout days and no hidden charges.

The clincher however was the revelation that the Jio service will promise to provide more data compared to any competing data plan from other cellular data providers. He stated that this was being done to ‘to remove confusion’ around the proliferation of data plans in the market today. He said that the Jio service will instituting a comprehensive process of monitoring all plans from competing players where they will not just match highest tariffs but provide 20 percent additional data in each of their plans, a move that is bound to send ripples through the sector.

Ambani also announced a special offer for Jio’s initial 100 million initial customers, who he referred to as “the ambassadors and co-founders of the Jio movement”. It comprises a custom-made Jio prime membership program for these customers, who can sign up for this service between 1 and 31 March this year. The Jio Prime membership will comprise a one-time fee of Rs 99 for a year, and will include access to the full bouquet of Jio media services (worth Rs 10,000) for a year until 31 March 2018.
