Directi has launched a new international calling app in India, Ringo, that allows users to make high-quality, expensive international calls, for a fraction of the amount and without using an internet connection.

Instead of VoIP, Ringo is designed to make an international call in a similar way to local calls--through your mobile carrier. When a Ringo user from India maks an international call through the app, she is connected to the Ringo servers and is then prompted to cut the line. Ringo then makes an outbound call to the other party then dials back the caller, effectively connecting them via their own local carriers. Using this approach, not only is the caller saving on their data plan (being an incoming call, you don't pay anything to your cellular carrier) but thanks to Ringo's arrangements numerous telcos--they have service within 17 countries right now, with more in the offing--the caller winds up paying a much lower amount compared to a regular international cellular callcall. All you need to make that call is a phone signal.

Being a callular call, all of the regular call features associated with your mobile plan--conferencing, caller ID etc--work transparently with this service. You can even use the service when roaming across India, although the service cannot dial to other numbers within the country. Although possible, using this service is a little more cumbersome when roaming Internationally across their partner countries (it involves registering the app twice with each of your SIM cards--your Indian one and an international one). Billing in this service happens via funds that are added to the Ringo account, and they do allow refunds in case you wish to discontinue the service at any point. Once you add call credits to your account, there is no validity period within which these need to be exhausted--they can be utilized across any duration of time.

"We believe our app will change the way India communicates with the world," said Bhavin Turakhia, CEO of Ringo and Directi. "In this country, reliable connectivity that can support VoIP calling is still far away. Ringo provides the perfect solution for Indian consumers to stay in touch with people abroad reliably and at a low cost."

This comes hot on the heels of Airtel's recent decision to charge VoIP users a hiked tariff (a very quiet announcement that they later retracted) and certainly has potential of garnering plenty of traction in the country.

Visit the company's website here to download the app, available for Android, iOS and Windows phones, starting today.
