A followup to 2014 multiplayer hit Titanfall is to include a solo campaign and magical elements, and will take some of its inspiration from the American Revolutionary and Civil War periods. Titanfall 2 is likely still a year away, but the video game's lead writer has been able to divulge a number of new details about the project.

Jesse Stern has writing credits on TV series Jake 2.0, The Mountain and NCIS, as well as video games Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, direct sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield 4. His current role at Titanfall developer Respawn is shaping up to straddle both worlds. The 2014 game, released by Battlefield publisher Electronic Arts on Microsoft's Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC platforms, was a multiplayer affair with ambitions of telling its story within the confines of its staggered structure.

Follow up Titanfall 2 has long been expected to drop its console exclusivity and, thanks to Stern, we can now say with certainty that it's to leverage more traditional storytelling methods by means of a dedicated singleplayer campaign. "We are doing our best to deliver a vision of grand global colonial warfare," he told Forbes, "retelling the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space." Those space pioneers are heading out to settle rather than conquer, so when their region is embroiled in conflict, weapons of war are derived from equipment that was originally "designed for excavation and construction, demolition and working the land."

Practical as that may be, there is still room for fans of the series to wonder about how those plans will be realised, especially when Stern says there will be scenes where "science meets magic," in a way that is "grounded and dirty and human and real."

Stern's start as a professional writer came through TV and it could be that Titanfall takes him back there, too. Studio head Vince Zampella is interested in developing "script and animated TV series," Stern explained, though the potential costs involved in a faithful Titanfall adaptation mean that approaches are still being chosen carefully. Titanfall 2 is expected to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC in early 2017, with a franchise spin-off projected for later this year on Android and iOS.
