Gears of War 4

Passing the baton to the son of previous protagonist Marcus Fenix, and taking place on a much changed and very stormy Earth-like planet, there are new alien beasts to contend with, new weapons to wield against them, and both versus and co-operative multiplayer modes to engage in.

Skylanders Imaginators game and Lego Dimensions packs

This year's Skylanders edition features 20 new figurines while a new Creation Crystal piece allows players to design and share their own in-game hero. Meanwhile, "Lego Dimensions" welcomes Wave 6 of its add-ons on September 27 (inc. Harry Potter, Ghostbusters, Adventure Time extras) and Wave 7 (inc. Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, E.T.) on November 18.

Battlefield 1

The team-based first-person action game goes back to World War I with period weaponry, costume, and the usual blend of air, land and sea vehicles.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

The 13-year-old "Call of Duty" series flings itself into the far future with the very sci-fi "Infinite Warfare," three of whose special editions also contain a remastered version of traditionalists' favorite "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare."
