On Monday, Facebook released a new update to its instant messaging app Messenger for iOS devices, bringing the app version to 5.0. The new app while bringing in a bunch of improvements to various features of the app also introduces the ability to record and share videos within the app itself. The app also adds the ability to view existing video clips on the device.

At the start of this month, Facebook had introduced voice calling to the app, allowing users to call any other Facebook user for free over WiFi. By aggresively improving on its current feature set, Facebook plans to remove the ability to chat from its main app and force users to instead use Messenger. The Facebook Messenger app is in strong competition with Facebook's recent purchase Whatsapp to become the primary messaging app for smart phone users.

The update to the Facebook app is available for all iOS devices on the App Store for free.
