'DSLR Camera Pro' app review: A high-end camera minus the bulk

While the 'DSLR Camera Pro' camera app has a few bugs, the overall experience is a good one, giving the user a DSLR feel, especially with phones that have high-end cameras

The DSLR Camera Pro app has all the features of a DSLR camera, minus the bulk. It also takes your inbuilt mobile phone camera a notch higher when it comes to picture quality. Some of the features the camera gives you at this price include a two-state shutter button. You also have the option of taking single shots, taking pictures in burst mode and you are also provided a timer option. Apart from this, the camera has a live histogram, exposure compensation and a light metering mode (matrix, centre-weighted, spot). You have the option of playing with the white balance and even toggle the various ISO options, giving this camera a big advantage over other in-built camera applications that your phone comes with.

While my overall experience has been good, there are a few bugs that I've noticed in the past two months that I have used this app. Hopefully, the developers will rectify this once they update the software.
One, the camera sometimes has a tendency to refuse to take photographs, even if you focus on an image. This is despite the fact that the ISO and white balance are on manual mode.
Second, the application has the tendency to crash often. This can be annoying, particularly when you're ready to capture the perfect moment.
Third, you cannot use your fingers to zoom in to a particular image. For those used to phone cameras, this can be a big turn-off. Instead, there is a magnifying glass icon at the corner of the screen that enables you to zoom into an image.
Fourth, the focus can work against you, even when you use the auto-focus application. The camera has a tendency to remain out of focus, even when you're tapping to manually focus on a particular point.
Fifth, the software developers – GD Software – have not updated the application since I paid for and downloaded it two months ago, which is disappointing.

However, despite these bugs, the overall experience has been satisfying. I have managed to capture some great pictures due to the number of options I have available to me. More importantly, I don't have to worry about changing a lens. The only thing I would look for once I buy my next phone is a fairly high-end camera to complement the app. DSLR Camera Pro is available only for Android phones. You can find it here on the Play Store for Rs 190.

Overall rating: ***1/2

Please note that many features are hardware-dependent. This means they won't be available for you if your device doesn't support them.
