Amazon unveils new range of tablets, e-readers; thinnest e-reader Kindle Voyage priced at $199

Five new Kindle tablets and two e-readers, including a new top end e-reader and a tablet designed for children have been launched by Amazon. 

The basic Kindle  has 6 inch display with 167 ppi. The device supports Wi-Fi and has long lasting battery that can last upto four weeks according to Amazon. The new Kindle comes with certain features such as Page flip which allows readers to skim e-books page-by-page or scan by chapter. It also has better integration with GoodReads, double the storage and the display is upgraded to an e-ink touchscreen. The upgraded e-reader costs around $79. It is available in India for pre-orders at Rs. 5,999 and will start shipping on October 9.


Amazon has upgraded the Kindle Paperwhite to the Kindle Voyage which measures less than 8mm thick and is 180 grams in weight with a screen resolution of 300 ppi. The Voyage starts at $199 and is the firm's new top-end e-reader. The device has a new PagePress function, allowing users to lightly press on the side of the e-reader to turn pages and a front light that adapts to reading during the day and night.

The new Fire HDX tablet has and 8.9 inch HDX display with has one million more pixels compared to iPad Air. At the retail cost starting at $374 the Kindle Fire HDX is 13 ounces lighter than its predecessor and is packed with a Snapdragon 805 (2.5 Ghz) processor. The Kindle also has a 8-megapixel rear camera which can capture videos at 1080p and features an HD front facing camera too. Amazon says that the device battery supports 12 hours of reading, which is 2 more hours than the previous version of Fire HDX. The Fire HDX will be available in  the US on October 21 and can be pre-ordered.

The Kindle Fire HD now comes in two sizes - Fire HD 6, a six inch version priced at $99 and Fire HD 7, a seven inch version for $139. With 1.5GHz quad core processor, the Fire HD comes with a VGA front-facing camera and a 2 megapixel rear camera. The new generation of Kindle Fire HD graphic performance three times better than the previous version and also has better display, according to Amazon. Its available for pre-order and will be available in the US from October 2.

The Fire HD tablets also come in Kids Edition by Kindle and has features such as preventing purchase from the app store and setting time limits for parents to control the usage of children. The FreeTime app gives kids access to kid-friendly content. The pictures clicked on the tablet will also be received in the cloud accounts of the parents, to add more security. The 6 inch version is priced at $149 while the 7 inch version is priced at $189. With a rubber casing and a tougher screen, the Kids Edition of the Tablet is made child proof. It is currently available only in the US and will start shipping on October 21.
