Aren’t we all simply tired of traffic jams everywhere? Literally, on every corner of the road, it is impossible to move at a steady pace. But, aerospace company Airbus has unveiled a new concept that could put an end to traffic jams. The concept vehicle, which is a part self-driving car, part flying machine is called a Pop.Up. Given its description, the vehicle feels almost like a car, a drone and a train, all in one.

During the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, Italdesign and Airbus world-premiered this concept which is designed to relieve traffic congestion in crowded megacities. Pop.Up envisages a modular system for multi-modal transportation that makes full use of both ground and airspace.

In terms of design, the vehicle is 2.6 meters long, 1.4 meters high and 1.5 meters wide, and simply turns into a car and is designed for two passengers. It can attach to a battery-powered chassis as well.

This system consists of three components namely, an Artificial Intelligence platform that, based on its user knowledge, manages travel and offers alternative usage scenarios. Secondly, a vehicle shaped like a passenger capsule designed to be coupled with two different and independent electric propelled modules (the ground module and the air module). Other public means of transportation (e.g. trains or hyperloops) could also integrate the Pop.Up capsule. And lastly, an interface module that dialogues with users in a fully virtual environment.

Airbus believes that the Pop.Up system will be able to give time back to commuters through a flexible, shared and adaptable new way of moving, within cities with the new user-focused transportation system concept.
