Anti-graft raids net 7 babus

Lokayukta police strike at nine places, unearthing disproportionate assets amounting to Rs6.86 crore.

The Karnataka Lokayukta police conducted raids at nine places across the state and unearthed disproportionate assets worth Rs6.86 crore accumulated by seven government officials on Wednesday. One of the officials trapped was earlier under the Lokayukta scanner.

Chamarajnagar additional deputy commissioner S Nagappa was found to have accumulated assets worth Rs1.35 crore more than his known income of Rs45.97 lakh, and another Rs35 lakh as loan. He had joined service in 1983 as a tahasildar. The Lokayukta police are yet to verify his eight bank passbooks and ascertain the value of an optical shop.

C Devaraju, first division assistant, HOPCOMS in Bangalore, amassed Rs87.56 lakh of wealth above his known income of Rs20 lakh since 1977, when he joined service.

Jayananda B Narasannavar, motor vehicle inspector at the RTO in Chikkodi, Belgaum, has been found possessing assets worth Rs1.14 crore, as against his income of Rs20 lakh during his service since 1990.

Srikanth R Mysore, executive engineer, panchayath raj engineering division, Sagar, Shimoga, was found to have assets worth Rs1.02 crore as opposed to his income of Rs51 lakh during his service since 1978. He was under Lokayukta scrutiny a couple of months ago for misappropriation in Shikaripur. Mysore had allegedly siphoned off Rs4 crore from a Rs12-crore road construction project. The Lokayukta police will now reopen the case against him.

The Lokayukta found disproportionate assets worth Rs95.30 lakh in the raid conducted on BC Shantha Kumar, an assistant manager with the Karnataka State Forest Industries Corporation in Hassan. His known income during his service period since 1976 was Rs29 lakh.

Pratap Singh Tiwari, director of Physical Education, Gulbarga University, was found holding assets worth Rs84.12 lakh more than his known income of Rs41 lakh. He entered the service as a P Ed instructor in 1978.

The raid unearthed a fortune of Rs67.89 lakh from Dharwad KIADB junior engineer Shivalingaiah. He had joined as a junior engineer in 1997 and his known income during this period was Rs15 lakh.
