Terrorists are still trying to penetrate the country’s, especially Maharashtra’s, coastline. The November 26 terror attacks had exposed the vulnerability of the state’s porous coastline.

Mohammed Omar Madani, the Laskar-e-Tayiba operative arrested by officers of the special cell of Delhi police on June 4, has told them that his primary duty was to make inroads into the Konkan coast of Maharashtra and the Malabar coast of Karnataka. But in the course of interrogation, police learnt that Madani was entrusted with multiple tasks.

He told the police that LeT had asked him to build contacts with fishermen in the Konkan and Malabar coastal areas. “Madani was asked to do this so that the LeT could have bases in the coastal areas,” an officer from the special cell said.

The 52-year-old LeT man was also asked to build contacts with people dealing in weapons, including workers in ordnance depots and firecracker factories across the country. “This is an interesting development, which has been highlighted for the first time. Madani told us that such workers were well versed in manufacturing improvised explosive devices,” the officer said.

Madani’s revelation showed that terror organisations were trying to tap local markets for explosives. This would mean that they need not transport it from across the border, he said.

Madani’s work did not end at this. He was also told to befriend computer graduates from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. The officer said Madani was scouting for people in the country whom he could send to the LeT base at Muridke in Pakistan for training. “Madani also handled all LeT finances in India,” he said.

The Delhi police have updated Maharashtra and Karnataka police, navy and the coast guard about Madani’s revelations, the officer said.

Madani’s role in 11/7 blasts
Madani got Rs4 lakh for recruiting 11/7 suspect – Kamal Ansari. He has told police that he had recruited Kamal Ansari from Madhubani in Bihar and sent him for training to Pakistan.

After completing his training, Kamal returned to India and was part of the terror team that was involved in the serial bombings on local trains in Mumbai on July 11, 2006. Madani has recruited at least 35 people over the past eight years and sent them to LeT bases in Pakistan for training.
