Even before the dust could settle on the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian, another alleged rape of a minor and murder of her grandmother by a police constable rattled the Kashmir valley on Monday.

Constable Nazir Ahmad was arrested from Tangmarg in Baramulla district of north Kashmir and booked under RPC section 302/376. Nazir, who is attached to the security wing of J&K Police, was formerly a guard of Tangmarg MLA and former tourism minister Ghulam Hassan Mir.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Viplav Kumar said he had been sexually exploiting a 15-year-old at his village for over two months.

“Nazir exploited the girl for two-and-a-half months. The issue created friction between their families. Nazir was asked to marry the girl, but he refused,” he said.

“It does not matter what people think. Since the girl is a minor, we have registered a case of rape,” Kumar said.

The issue took an ugly turn on Monday when a scuffle broke out between the families of Nazir and the girl. The girl’s grandmother was killed in the fight, sparking spontaneous street protests in the area.

“I met the protesters and told them a case had been registered and the accused arrested, which cooled down tempers. The situation is now under control,” the SSP said.

Meanwhile, Kashmir remained shut on the eighth consecutive day, protesting the alleged rape and murder of the Shopian women. Curfew was clamped at a number of places and dozens arrested to thwart a proposed Shopian march by separatists. Four youths were injured in the police action.

Forensic reports confirmed the women were raped, but did not conclude they were murdered.
