As executives of around 10 years of average working experience get together in the class rooms of IIM-A for the one-year Post-Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX), discussions and business problem-solving sessions take a new turn in the country’s premier business school.

As the 80 students of PGPX in IIM-A form groups of around seven students each to study together and brainstorm to solve many business problems and other subjects, each student shares his or her perspective based upon experience. With the profile of the students of the current batch as diverse as ranging from bankers with many years of experience in Middle-East countries to fighter pilots and managers of construction houses to scientist, the discussion and cross learning becomes a matter of excitement and one of their most attractive and fruitful aspects of being a part of the course for these students of the current batch of PGPX.

Talking about this particular nature of the executives’ programme, Seenu Kurien, a student of the current batch of PGPX, said, “One of the most fascinating parts of the PGPX programme in IIM-A is the diverse professional backgrounds the students come from. This provides us an opportunity to expose ourselves to a wide spectrum of knowledge and experiences and learn from the different perspectives arising out of this diversity.”

Kurien, who has been managing projects for a construction industry in US, said, “I am now learning from the experiences and knowledge of people from various backgrounds such as marketing, finance, accounting, operations and so on. Marketing was an area I did not have much knowledge about. But after sharing  the experiences with the batch-mates who are from the marketing area, I find it extremely exciting and now I am even planning to pursue a career in marketing.”

Like Kurien, other students of the batch too are finding the diversity in the profile of the batch as an added advantage of value addition and a widening horizon.

Another student of the batch, Parag Prasad, who has around 10 years of working experience in Information Technology (IT), said, “The opportunity to share the ideas and experience with people coming from diverse backgrounds is rare and I have never have such an experience before.” Prasad said, “Earlier I used to focus on just one perspective during problem solving, but now my focus and perspectives have widened after interacting with my classmates and sharing their experiences.”

A mixed bag of diverse talents
The 2009-10 PGPX batch has 80 students, with an average age of 34 years and average work experience of 10 years. Many of them have an average international work exposure of above seven years. Students come from a diverse mix of areas, such as financial services, telecom, IT, manufacturing, and public sector. It has 56 engineers, a doctor and a CA.
