“The rains arrived in Ratnagiri on Sunday. But there is no forecast for its arrival in the city as favourable conditions are yet to be seen,” said K Sathidevi, deputy director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai.
Monsoon arrived in Andaman and Nicobar islands on May 20, resulting in its arrival over Kerala almost eight days before the normal date and even at Ratnagiri on Sunday; however, officials are worried about its onset in Mumbai. Generally the rains hits the city by June 10. But this year there are indications of early progression of south-west monsoon.
“The cyclone Aila has affected the progress of monsoon a bit,” said RV Sharma, deputy director general, Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai.
“Usually when a cyclone hits the Bay of Bengal a drop in the atmospheric energy on the Arabian Sea is observed. This could affect the monsoon activities in Maharashtra. However, we are watching the weather closely now, and the upshot of Aila on the Arabian Sea will unfold in two to three days,” Sharma explained.
“Since the cyclone has receded, one can look forward to favourable monsoon conditions in a couple of days,” he added.
According to the weatherman, the city can get light rain with thunder storm during the next two days. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 34°C and minimum temperature will be around 29°C.
