Anticipating an 'exodus' of private school students to government institutes, infrastructure in as many as 80 government schools across the national capital have been upgraded and their intake capacity increased.

Education department officials of the Delhi Government said as a result of the fee hike in private schools, parents are now opting for government schools and that is why the infrastructure are being upgraded.

"We have already upgraded infrastructure of 80 schools across the city so that we could accommodate more number of students," a senior official of the Education Department said.

Government schools can now accommodate at least 30,000 students more than the earlier capacity, the official said.

"In the next academic season, we will be able to accommodate at least 1,25,000 students," the official said.

The Education Department is also expecting more number of students in the coming season following improved performance of Government schools in both Class-X and Class XII CBSE examinations.

The pass percentage of Government school students in Class X examination has gone up from last year's 83.68 per cent to 89.44 per cent this year.

In the Government school category, Delhi schools topped among all other cities of the country in the CBSE Class X results.

The official said 130 schools in the city have achieved 100 per cent pass percentage while 561 schools have recorded a pass percentage of 90 per cent in the CBSE Class X exam. The Government schools here also performed well in Class XII exam.

The Government feels that the two factors -- fee hike and the superior performance of its schools in CBSE examinations -- will encourage parents to opt for its schools.

The Delhi High Court, in an interim order last month, had allowed private unaided schools to increase fee.

A bench headed by Justice A K Sikri has allowed to implement the government's order to increase the fee up to 25 per cent depending on the existing tuition fees as the educational institutes were facing problem in implementing 6th pay commission for the teaching staff.

The Delhi government on February 11 had allowed to increase the fee structure in private schools though the parent associations have been opposing any hike in fees.

The parents have challenged the government order much to the chagrin of the private school authorities.
