Those daring to assault a traffic policeman on duty, beware! You may face as serious a charge as attempt to murder.

The traffic department of city police has decided to add section 307 of IPC, besides other charges, in the case of a person who assaults a traffic policeman. The development comes in the wake of a spate of incidents where traffic cops have been attacked by the violators of traffic law.

On Friday, head constable Annaram Savajibhai was beaten up by one Bhupat Makwana at Kalupur circle when Makwana was stopped by the cop to pay a fine for having violated traffic rule. A complaint was filed at Kalupur police station.

A similar incident of assault on a traffic cop was registered at Sabarmati police station on Thursday. In that incident, a rickshaw driver had assaulted a traffic cop and a home guard jawan.

These two incidents have raised alarm among senior officers so far as the safety of traffic policemen in the city is concerned. For this, the traffic department will now apply stringent sections of IPC against the culprits. This, officers believe, will work as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Until now, only section 332 of IPC (beating a government official on duty) was being  applied on the accused who could easily get bail.

“To take strict action against those who attack traffic cops, we will now add more serious sections against them,” a senior officer in the traffic department told DNA.
The stringent section being considered is IPC 307. The one booked under this section faces the serious charge of attempt to murder. “Sometimes, it so happens that the accused, in an attempt to escape, speeds away by hitting the cop and the intention is no less than to kill the cop,” the senior officer said.

According to him, some times the culprit also attacks the cop with sharp-edged weapons like knife, which is very serious.

“We will try to add all possible strict sections in the case so that an example is set and people will think twice before attempting to beat a traffic cop.”
