A passenger who had travelled to the US and Canada recently has tested positive for H1N1, taking the number of positive cases in India to four. The passenger was earlier given a clean chit by the health authorities in Hyderabad. He arrived in Hyderabad transiting London by British Airways flight BA-277 on May 30. Since he did not report fever upon arrival, he was given a clean chit at the airport, health ministry officials said.

However, a day later, the passenger reported at a government hospital complaining of cough, running nose and fever. His samples tested positive for swine flu. Health authorities said he had been put on oseltamivir, the only drug that is effective against H1N1, and his contacts are being traced for monitoring their health status.

A passenger each was isolated at Delhi and Cochin airports. Four of the 141 samples tested so far in the country have tested positive.
Meanwhile, three patients and a woman intern, who tended to the mother-son duo that returned from Boston, US, carrying H1N1 virus, have been quarantined at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for suspected swine flu.

“Reports confirm the mother and son who arrived from Boston on May 28 after a vacation are suffering from swine flu. We have now quarantined a student of our college and a family of father, mother and daughter. We have airlifted their blood samples and oesophagus swabs to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, New Delhi, and are expecting a report soon,” Coimbatore Medical College Hospital’s resident medical officer Sivaprasam P told DNA over phone.

“The intern was not part of the medical team treating the mother-son, but she took their blood samples and interacted with them.

“She complained of fever and showed signs of common flu. We have kept her under observation and will take a decision after receiving the report from Delhi. The family of three arrived in Coimbatore from Atlanta at 2.30 pm on June 1 by Jet Airways. They travelled to their native Ooty by car and on reaching there, the daughter fell ill.

They came here early in the morning today [Wednesday]. The father and mother haven’t shown any signs of illness, but we have quarantined them as well as a precaution,” he said.

The hospital has so far admitted 11 patients with suspected swine flu. While four of them tested negative and were discharged, the remaining have been quarantined. Of the seven quarantined, the daughter of 34-year-old Serin, who arrived from Boston and was confirmed to be suffering from swine flu along with her four-year-old son, has tested negative.
