Hollywood diva Sharon Stone has given her consent to play a character reportedly inspired from Jhumpa Lahiri’s award-winning novel The Namesake. Sharon has also agreed to come down to Mumbai and Kolkata to shoot for the film tentatively titled Lost Love. The film, sources say, will be produced by either Lighthouse or Lionsgate productions in Hollywood along with its Indian partner, California-based Sampurn Entertainment.

The script, jointly written by Tapan Saha from India along with Josaline Hall and Mila Marcader from Hollywood, will show Sharon as a daughter of a wealthy, liberal business family in Los Angeles who is dumped by her Indian lover in her college, who returns to India to marry a Bengali girl. Ditto happened with Manhattan girl Maxine in The Namesake, who is dumped by the protagonist Gogol for Moushumi, a Bengali girl born and brought up in the UK.

“The character has a certain similarity with Maxine from The Namesake but it is much more fleshed out. It’s almost like what might have happened with Maxine later on in her life. Sharon Stone will play a typical LA girl who is dumped by her Bengali lover. She moves on in life only to realise that she has not completely gotten over her lover. She decides to land up in Kolkata and subsequently Mumbai in search of him. The movie traces her journey from LA to India with snapshots from the past,” says Tapan, whose other Hollywood-Bollywood joint production Chimera (see box) goes on the floors this July.

Tapan will be directing the movie along with Ron Calvy who assisted Francis Ford Copolla in The Godfather. According to Tapan, Sharon is excited at the prospect of travelling to Mumbai for the film. “She had gone through the script and has given her consent to be in the film. I will be flying off to Hollywood soon to make her sign the formal contract.”  So, who’s playing the lead opposite Sharon? Tapan is not saying, but sources say that the first knock will be on Amitabh Bachchan’s door.
