The baby boy born with his heart outside his body has begun responding to treatment. After reports in the media about the boy born to Harish Parmar and his wife, he was admitted to the UN Mehta Heart Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable and improving, on Tuesday.

An NGO and an individual have also come forward to offer their help to Parmar concerning his son’s medical treatment.

The boy was born with his heart outside his body, a condition known as Ectopia Cordis. On account of treatment being delayed by more than 36 hours, he developed a severe infection. The child is also suffering from renal problems brought on by the delay in treatment and the congenital heart condition. Despite the complications, he is responding to treatment.

“At present, my son is being treated by a team of doctors. I am told that he is recovering from the infection and that there has been a 20 per cent improvement in his condition. A team of kidney specialists also examined my boy on Wednesday,” said Harish Parmar.

The UN Mehta hospital on Wednesday afternoon communicated the boy’s condition to the media. “As this is a very rare case, the boy is suffering from multiple medical problems which need to addressed through surgery. But, before taking any decision regarding further treatment, he must be free of septicaemia [the infection],” said paediatric cardiac surgeon Dr Kashyap Sheth.

Dr Shah said that the boy has been suffering from renal problems because of the delay in treatment and congenital heart problem. Further treatment will require surgery, for which his condition will need to be stable.

While the child has been placed on antibiotic medication to bring the infection under control, doctors have sent his blood for culture reports, which will be available in a few days.

Parmar said that because of the wide coverage of the matter by the media, he has been offered financial and medical help by an NGO and an individual. “After seeing the news in the media, a Bangalore-based NGO has shown its keenness to provide full treatment for the baby. I do not know the name of the NGO, but I received its contact details from media persons. Also, Navinbhai Mehta, a resident of Porbandar, has offered me Rs5,000. But the hospital is not charging us for the treatment. So I am not approaching these sources,” he said.
