Fed up of strays littering his compound, a senior citizen in his sixties took the drastic step of shooting two stray dogs with his air gun at Marol in Andheri (East) on Wednesday.

Both strays survived the shooting and were admitted to the SPCA hospital in
Parel.

Eyewitness Glenn Ebnett, along with Bombay High Court-appointed animal welfare officer Jitendra Shah from the NGO Karuna, filed an FIR at the MIDC police station on Wednesday.

“He shot one dog yesterday and the other dog in the evening. They were never a nuisance so we don’t understand the reason for the act. One is hurt in the ribs and lungs and the other is critically injured,” said Steffi Ebnett, daughter of the eyewitness.

“There’s no reason for shooting the strays. He had an air gun and would even shoot birds. I had warned him that this would land him in trouble and was against the Animal Act. He wanted me to get rid of the strays in a gunny bag, but I refused,” Ebnett added.
“We want the police to confiscate the gun. The strays were peaceful, so why were they shot?” Shah asks.

“We have registered a case against him under section 429 of IPC, and also under the Animal Act. We have recovered the gun and will arrest him,” a police officer from MIDC police station said.
