The electoral battle in Rampur is getting sordid each day.
On Tuesday, Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh filed a complaint with the Election Commission charging SP rebel Azam Khan with distributing ‘nude’ photographs and obscene CDs of actor and Rampur candidate Jaya Prada.
Singh has demanded that Azam Khan be put under house arrest on Wednesday. The Congress’ Rampur candidate Noor Bano has also been named in the complaint. Azam Khan has said he would file a defamation case against Jaya Prada for the allegations.
Amar Singh had earlier said that such machinations might drive the actor to suicide. On Tuesday, Khan’s supporters filed a complaint with police alleging that it was Singh who was driving the actor to suicide.
Jaya Prada alleged that her her rooms in a Rampur hotel had been raided twice. “My family and I are being harassed... this is crossing all limits of tolerance... a woman is being hounded in this manner... this is a conspiracy,” she said.
“It’s unfortunate that a person who I always respected as an elder brother is conspiring against me,” Jaya Prada said. Asked about Singh’s statement that she might commit suicide, Jaya Prada said: “He has not said anything wrong... anybody could be driven to take such an extreme step in such a situation.”
However, Azam Khan refuted all allegations. “I swear in the name of Allah that I have nothing to do with the nude photographs or CDs they say have been distributed in Rampur,” Khan said.
“In fact, I have not even seen such a photo or CD,” Khan added.
Asked about Jaya Prada committing suicide, Khan said: “She’s attempted it twice earlier, so it’s not surprising ... she might do it again. After all, she is an actress.” He also had a word of advice for party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav: “He is national-level leader, he should not have compromised his stature for an actress.”
Khan has thrown in his lot with Jaya Prada’s opponent, Congress candidate Begum Noor Bano, an erstwhile royal, sources say. The last day of campaigning on Monday was marked by Khan’s supporters, shouting: “Azam Khan ki baat pe, mohar lagegi haath pe.” (On Azam’s word, we shall vote for Congress.)
There is wide speculation that Azam might join the Congress after the elections. UP Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi told a news channel in Delhi on Tuesday that Azam was indeed helping the Congress in Rampur. “We could have a relationship with him after the polls,” she said. But that would depend on the result of this murky election in Rampur.
