BJP leader Varun Gandhi, booked under NSA for his alleged hate speeches, received a reprieve on Friday when the Supreme Court (SC) extended his parole till May 14.

The extension of the interim bail will enable 29-year-old BJP candidate from Pilibhit to campaign in the remaining two phases of polling. A bench headed by chief justice KG Balakrishnan said the conditions imposed in granting him parole on April 16 would remain in place.

However, state’s counsel Harish Salve contended, that  “the young man does not bother about the Supreme Court order”. He didn’t inform the Pilibhit DM about his whereabouts between April 16 and 20 and April 23 and 26 when he was in UP.

However, Varun’s lawyer Mukul Rohatgi refuted the charge saying that the petitioner was in Delhi during the period and it was not necessary for him to inform about his whereabouts to the Pilibhit district magistrate.
