DCPCR asks Delhi police for detailed probe in Shanno's case

After recommending filing of an FIR in the Aakriti Bhatia case, the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights on Saturday asked police to conduct a detailed probe into the death of Shanno Khan to find out if criminal proceedings can be taken up in the incident.

Shanno, an eleven-year-old student breathed her last in a hospital here last week after being allegedly meted out corporal punishment by her teacher in the municipal school.

The teacher allegedly made the girl stand in sun for two hours with bricks on her shoulders.
    
In its statement to Delhi Police, the child rights body said, "The Commission feels that the offences relating to the deceased (Shanno) which make out a case of severe corporal punishment (and) presumably led to her death and needs to investigated more thoroughly and expansible."

"We shall appreciate if you get the entire evidence looked into by a competent law officer in order to find out whether the application of mere Section 304 (A) would suffice," it said.
    
The DCPCR also asked the police commissioner to direct the area DCP handling the case of the Shanno Khan to undertake appropriate investigations and send detailed reports about the status of the cases.
    
Following Shanno's death, the MCD had asked its Vigilance Department to conduct a probe. The principal and the accused teacher of the school remain under suspension.
