The World Cup organisers have set their house in order, finally. After months of uncertainty, the Central Organising Committee (COC) has got on with work for cricket’s showpiece event to be held in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in 2011.

At a meeting on Tuesday, the Boards of the three countries decided that India will have to host a large chunk of the matches after Pakistan was stripped of the hosting rights.

More precisely the BCCI has been allotted 29 matches of the 49-game tournament, which is roughly 60 per cent. Besides, there will be one quarterfinal and one semifinal in the country. The venue of the final, of course, remains unchanged. It will be the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka will get to host 12 while Bangladesh will play host to eight matches. Dhaka will host the opening ceremony besides two quarterfinals at two venues. India and Sri Lanka will share the remaining two quarterfinals and the semifinals.

The Indian Board will hold the matches at eight centres. The venues have not yet been announced but it could be in Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mohali, Nagpur besides Mumbai.

More significantly, the COC, chaired by former BCCI president Sharad Pawar, has relocated its central secretariat to Mumbai. The committee has also decided to appoint Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the BCCI, as the tournament director. IS Bindra, currently the principal adviser to the ICC, will work closely with the organising committee. A security directorate will be formed under the chairmanship of BCCI president Shashank Manohar while N Srinivasan will head the venue inspection.

The meeting was also attended by ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat and representatives of the three hosting countries. It was the first meeting of the committee since the ICC stripped Pakistan of the hosting rights.
