Come elections and faith comes alive for leaders in Kashmir.

From chief minister Omar Abdullah to his flamboyant father Dr Farooq Abdullah to new entrant Khalida Shah, everyone is trying to invoke God’s blessings this election season.

Omar took some time out from his hectic electioneering schedule and air-dashed to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah at the holy city of Mecca. His father along with Congress state president Saif-ud-din Soz drove to Charar-e-Sharief to pay obeisance at the shrine of Sheikh-ul-Alam Sheikh Noor-din-Noorani.

If her brother and nephew can do it, how can Khalida stay behind? She too joined the new lot of political faithful and drove straight to Charar-e-Sharief to pray for the success in the elections.

“It is permitted in Islam that if a person wants to start something afresh, he should seek God’s blessings. And after the mission is accomplished a Muslim can offer nimaz-e-shukharana (thanksgiving prayers) towards God. I think there is nothing wrong if Muslims are seeking divine blessings”, said Mufti Bashir-ud-din, Grand Mufti of Kashmir.

It is not the top leadership, but every second-rung leader pays visit to the local shrines during canvassing trying to keep date with God and impress the supporters about his god-fearing capabilities.

With Omar missing from scene, the electioneering looks insipid in Kashmir which is witnessing a battle royale with top guns trying their luck from the three parliamentary constituencies.

“Omar had devised a programme long time ago, but due to some or the other circumstances, it got delayed. After performing umrah, the chief minister will return to the state on April 21 and join the electioneering,” said Rattan Lal Gupta, provincial president of the National Conference.
