The deputy health officer of North Zone Manish Fancy was suspended on Saturday, for negligence in performing duties and failure to control the outbreak of jaundice.
Municipal commissioner IP Gautam suspended deputy health officer of North Zone Manish Fancy on Saturday, for negligence in performing duties and failure to control the outbreak of jaundice in Hirawadi area of North Zone in east Ahmedabad. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has also ordered further inquiry against Fancy with regard to the case.
Fancy failed to take precautionary measures in public interest to check the epidemic in Hirawadi area, said Gautam in a statement issued by the civic body. The decision to suspend Fancy was taken in a meeting convened on Saturday to discuss issues like pre-monsoon action plan, health and sanitation.
According to a senior official of the AMC, Fancy's slackness in setting up a mechanism for regular inspection of water and sanitation was one of the major reasons for the outbreak of jaundice in the area.
"He failed to note the increase in the cases of jaundice in the area. It was only after a resident of Hirwadi area drew our attention that the seriousness of the situation came to the fore," said the official.
A total of 147 cases of jaundice have been registered in the area in the last one week, of which four patients have been treated in a private hospital, said the municipal commissioner in a statement. He also said that a team from the health department has surveyed the area and has distributed chlorine tablets to check the spread of the disease.
This apart, water samples have been sent for testing, while pesticides are also being used as part of the preventive measures. Mobile medical vans were sent to the area for on-the-spot treatment of the patients; the commissioner has also ordered the engineering department to solve the problem of leak in the drainage systems as soon as possible.
Despite repeated attempts, the municipal commissioner could not be contacted for comments.
