Taliban imposes Sharia, encircling Islamabad

The Pakistani Taliban have begun enforcing Islamic law in the Bajaur tribal region, located just 100 km from the federal capital.

Even as the Taliban began enforcing Islamic law in the Bajaur region, reports said militants were consolidating their hold on Buner in an attempt to encircle Islamabad. With the imposition of the Sharia, Taliban barred women from coming out of the house without male relatives, banned shaving and asked people not to use government financial aid for women. They also stopped people from visiting a local Sufi shrine.

Militants are also entering Buner district in large numbers, 100km from Islamabad. No opposition was offered to the Taliban fighters who entered the area as police and security forces avoided any contact with them, locals said.

Pak flip-flop on Indian hand
Pakistan’s interior ministry advisor Rehman Malik on Saturday said there was no evidence of an Indian hand in the Lahore attack on Sri Lankan cricketers, contradicting the city police statement just a day earlier. Meanwhile, an Indian was among six people arrested in Rawalpindi for allegedly planning a terror attack on a police academy, according to Dawn news channel.

UK suspects worked at airport
Members of the alleged Al Qaeda cell suspected of plotting an Easter terror attack worked for a cargo firm based at Manchester Airport. One of them drove vans which have access to sensitive locations. A further two had passed security checks which enabled them to guard premises overnight.

The revelations came as police continued to question the 12 suspects and search properties in Liverpool, including one being examined as a possible bomb factory.

ISI helping Mehsud: Newsweek
Baitullah Mehsud, the chief of Pakistani Taliban, has links with the country’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), Newsweek reported. Mehsud was tipped off by ISI, to enable him to escape attempts to capture or kill him in the last two years, the report said.

Two counter-terrorism experts familiar with official US government’s reporting told the magazine that officials in both Washington and Islamabad suspect Mehsud has contacts inside the ISI, who are tipping him off before Pakistani troops can pounce. Infiltrators in J&K.
