Christians across the city will observe Good Friday, the day when Jesus Christ was crucified, with piety and hope. All churches in the city have made special arrangements to commemorate the mythological arrest of Jesus Christ, his trial, crucifixion, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven. Special mass have been organised at various churches on the occasion of Good Friday.

The 40-day-long period of fasting and austerity begins with Ash Wednesday - when the season of Lent begins. It ends on Easter Sunday, when Jesus rose from the dead.

Some people believe that ‘Good’ in Good Friday is referred to as ‘God’ and it is also a common belief that ‘Good’ is referred to the gift brought by martyrdom. It is also celebrated as a festival of life and spirit.

“I and my family will be attending ‘The Way of the Cross’ in the morning which signifies the path Jesus had gone through before being crucified,” said Jisha Nepoleon, a resident of Chandkheda.

The observation of the Day begins with a candle light vigil on Saturday night from 11 pm, followed by a midnight mass. There will be another mass on Sunday morning at various churches across the city including the St Xavier’s Loyola Hall, St Xavier’s Mirzapur, Mt Carmel Cathedral, St Xavier’s College, CSI Church, CNI Church and St Jude Church.

The traditional Catholic service for Good Friday is traditionally held in mid-afternoon to match up to the final words of Jesus from the cross.  However, modern schedules have led many churches to shift services to a more convenient time allowing more people to participate.  “I work in a private firm so I don’t get an off. It will be a regular day for me. Modern times have really made it hard for people like me to attend masses for the whole day. However, I shall be attending the Xavier’s college parish mass early at 7 in the morning and then continue my day’s routine work” says Jini Maxin, a resident of Satellite.
