Rashtriya Janata Dal politician and leader of the opposition in Bihar Rabri Devi is under scrutiny by the Election Commission after the ruling Janata Dal (United) complained that she made insulting personal remarks against chief minister Nitish Kumar and state JD(U) chief Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lalan and demanded action for violation of the poll code.

The Election Commission is examining the veracity of the video footage of the former Bihar chief minister, wife of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, in which she is shown making insulting remarks against Kumar and Lalan.

"We have sent the CD to the state election office and the Election Commission for action for violation of the model code of conduct," a JD(U) politician told the Press Trust of India after Rabri Devi's remarks sparked a controversy.

The EC's move came after the JD(U) approached it seeking a ban on poll campaigning by Rabri Devi for her "abusive remarks". The party also sought termination of Rabri Devi's membership of the state legislative assembly and threatened to file a defamation case against her.

The television footage showed Rabri Devi telling an election rally, "Lalan Singh is the brother-in-law of Nitish... and Nitish is the brother-in-law of Lalan. That is why both of them are always seen holding each other's hands."

Kumar and Lalan are not related, but the term 'brother-in-law' (saala in Hindi, also a term of abuse) was used in an abusive way, the JD(U) claimed.

"It is quite surprising that a leader like Rabri Devi, who ruled Bihar for more than seven and half years, is using such abusive words against her political opponents," JD(U) national spokesman Shivanand Tiwari said.
