Ahmedabad will become the first city to represent India at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, a six-month-long exhibition focusing on the theme 'Better city, better life'. The city will be provided with $3 lakh to participate in the expo, where 233 countries and international firms will work in the area of urban development.

Municipal commissioner IP Gautam said that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation intends to showcase urban development in Gujarat as an investment opportunity, at the Shanghai World Expo 2010.

"Our entry was decided last November. We wanted to go ahead with the planning while projecting Gujarat's efforts in urban planning. We are in the process of chalking out plans of presenting the state's development at its best and showcasing investment opportunities in urban development," he said.

Ahmedabad has been selected to erect a stall under the urban best practices area (UBPA), which has been included in the Shanghai expo for the first time.

The international selection committee examined 87 cities before shortlisting the participating ones. Of the 59 selected cities, Ahmedabad is the only entry from India.
