With the marathon speeches they deliver, one would think that addressing a public gathering would be child’s play for a politician. But all political parties worth their salt know that how you talk is as important as what you talk during a rally.

Hence with the Lok Sabha elections drawing closer, the second and third rank leaders of all parties have started taking courses in voice modulation, body language and stage confidence.

Parties rely on their second and third rank leaders to conduct small rallies and gatherings in certain localities to help them garner votes of the grassroots voters. The leaders, mostly corporators or district chief of their respective parties, are keen to improve their oratory skills by usage of right words, positive body language and appropriate facial expressions.

“More than 50% of the politicians who have enrolled for training are women,” said Shekhar Kunte, who teaches voice modulation.

“I teach them how to speak impressively by training them to modulate the rise and fall of their voice,” said Kunte.

“I ask them to speak about society and not about themselves,” he added. The politicians are made to read the Mahabharata to learn about politics in ancient India. They are also taught acting.

“The one thing that a politician is really afraid of is the public’s reaction to his/her speech. So we ask them to shout, cry and smile to connect with the people,”Kunte said.

Without a doubt, all the training has helped boost the confidence of the leaders. “We all like to have a place on stage but when it comes to deliver a speech we prefer to stay behind,” said a Congress leader from Andheri. “After attending the course I am confident that I can successfully address a public gathering,” he added.

A woman leader from BJP, who also underwent training, said, “Though I still haven’t had a chance to address a rally, the voice modulation classes helped me during my interaction with the media.”

Shiv Sena recently had organised a workshop for its officials on how to deliver speech in an effective manner. BJP too trained its officials on what issues should be raised during the campaign.
