Actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi on Friday, expressed happiness over the Supreme Court direction to the Election Commission to allot common symbol to his Praja Rajyam Party.

"Our rivals said we will not get a common symbol. But we had faith in God and the judiciary. We have your support and blessings. We will get a common symbol now and we will be successful in the elections," a visibly elated Chiranjeevi addressing a gathering during his road show in East Godavari district said.

The Praja Rajyam has been fighting a legal battle ever since the Election Commission rejected its request to allot a common symbol.

Chiranjeevi personally met the election commissioners in Delhi to plead his case which went in vain.

The party filed a petition in the High Court but later withdrew "strategically".

The Supreme Court's direction comes as a huge boost to the fledgling party as it feels a level playing field has been ensured in the poll arena now.

Meanwhile, Lok Satta Party of bureaucrat-turned-politician Jayaprakash Narayan also expressed happiness over the Apex Court's direction.

Narayan, a former member of the Adminstrative Reforms Commission, launched the Lok Satta Party two years ago to fight for clean and corruption-free politics.

The Supreme Court toon Friday, directed the Election Commission to allot common symbols to the three political parties - Praja Rajyam Party, Lok Satta and actory-turned politician DMDK in Tamil Nadu - for the ensuing general elections.

A Bench of chief justice KG Balakrishnan and justice P Sathasivam, however, clarified that the directions are only 'interim' for the present elections and the parties cannot claim any equity until the dispute was settled.

The Apex Court also stayed an Andhra Pradesh High Court order directing the EC to allot common symbols to all registered political parties in the state.
