Having created ripples in Ranji Trophy- winning it for the 38th time, Mumbai ended the season on a sour note by being knocked out of All India Vijay Hazare Trophy in the quarterfinal match played at the Polytechnic Institute ground, Agartala on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu edged past the Ranji champions by 56 runs.

Despite losing first two matches, Mumbai fought back hard to emerge league leaders in the points table in the West Zone qualifiers, however they did not live up to the expectations on Wednesday.

Mumbai chose to field and had a tough task in hand to chase a stiff target of 253. Eventually, they failed to notch up the target and were bundled out for a mere 196 with Abhishek Nayar scoring 36, the highest.

The way skipper Wasim Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane started the chase it looked that the Western outfit would reach the target easily, but first change medium-pacer Vijaykumar Yo Mahesh broke the strong partnership sending skipper back home.

Nayar and Rahane did their bit to save the match, but the two were sent back in quick successions with the scoreboard reading 86. Experienced Amol Muzumdar couldn’t do much with the bat again. In the end Mumbai were folded out for 196, 56 short of the target.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu opener Srikkanth Anirudha slammed a brilliant half century that saw his team put up a challenging 252. R Ashwin contributed with a crucial 46. For Mumbai, left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla was the most successful bowler with 3-43.

Brief scores: Tamil Nadu 252-9 in 50 ovs (S Anirudha 67, A Karthik 38, R Ashwin 46; U Malvi 2-39, Iqbal Abdulla 3-43) beat Mumbai 196 in 45.5 ovs (A Rahane 22, W Jaffer, A Nayar 36, A Raut 33; Suthesh 2-39, S Vidyut 3-32); Delhi 209-8 in 47 ovs (M Sharma 43) lost to Bengal 210-8 in 46.1 ovs (M Tiwary 96 n.o., W Saha 30, C Nanda 3-44).
