Nine die as jeep falls off bridge

In a tragic incident, nine persons, including eight students from Tapi district, died when the jeep they were travelling in, fell off a bridge into a shallow river near Navapur in Maharashtra on Monday. The incident spread a feeling of shock in the entire area, even as one student survived the horrible incident.

According to information, a jeep (GJ-5-PP-7453) fell off a bridge on Rangavali river in Raigan village near Navapur in the wee hours of Monday. Jeep driver Wasim Qureshi, a resident of Uchhal, lost control of the steering while negotiating a sharp turn, which led to the vehicle falling off the bridge.

The jeep fell over 50 feet before landing in the river. The shallow river proved to be fatal for the unfortunate passengers as they suffered grievous injuries as their bodies banged with the rocks in the riverbed.

Qureshi and eight students died on the spot, while Dinesh Gamit, the only student from Ahwa, escaped with injuries, and was hospitalised.

The nine students were undergoing computer training in an institute in Uchhal, and they were on their way to Dhulia in Maharashtra to appear in the exam.

The deceased students include six men and two women. They are identified as Jashoda Vadvi, Ranjita Gamit, Jagdeep Vasave, Ashish Vasava, Praful Gavit, Nirav Vasava, Nitin Vadvi and David Vadvi. They are residents of different villages in Uchhal.

The deceased Nirav Vasava was the cousin of Nizar MLA Paresh Vasava, while Ranjita Gamit was the daughter of Paankhri village’s Gulab Gamit.
