A day after the embarrassing dissolution of Gujarat unit of Youth Congress, a section of Congress on Wednesday sought to spread some cheers by describing the ongoing recruitment drive as a runaway success. Some local leaders have claimed that about 25,000 new members have been recruited in the two Lok Sabha seats of Ahmedabad East and West over the past fortnight.

With four more days to go before the recruitment drive comes to an end, the Youth Congress (YC) leaders expect the final figure in the two constituencies to touch one lakh.

“Rahulji’s visits to the state, especially Ahmedabad, have motivated the youth to join politics. Youth Congress members might be holding out the submission of their membership form for the last day; therefore we are expecting a huge rush by the weekend.

Though an exhaustive totally has not been drawn up yet, it is estimated that 25,000 new members have already registered,” said Rajesh Brahmbhatt, president of the now-dissolved Ahmedabad city unit of the Youth Congress.

During his visits to the urban areas, Rahul appeared to be focussing on the upper echelons of the educated classes, such as engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants and financial experts.

A day after the Gandhi scion met the professionals at a specially organised meeting in Bhaikaka Hall on Monday, Manish Doshi, Congress spokesperson and one of the meeting organisers, said, “The youth were delighted after interacting with him. There has been a perceptible spurt in number of inquiries about the procedure to join Youth Congress.”

“Despite the constraint of time, young professionals have started showing interest in contributing to politics, which is a positive sign,” said Nikunj Balar, a lawyer instrumental in organising the meet.

While a section of Congress leaders scoffed at the claims of enrolment of 25,000 new members, state party president Siddharth Patel said though he was not following the recruitment process very closely, he was confident the figure would be higher.
Pradesh Returning Officer for the elections, Vijay Inder Singla, said, “The highest number of applications are expected in the last four days, but right now, I guess 60-70,000 members would have been recruited.”
