With five more hepatitis-B patients from Modasa taluka succumbing to the disease at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on Friday, the death toll from the disease now stands at 41. Two of the three victims were identified as Parthibhai Khan (8) and Parmar Fatehsinh (80).
The outbreak of the disease has also brought to light many medical malpractices in the taluka that had, hitherto, escaped public notice.

It is already widely known that the repeated use of hypodermic syringes is most likely to blame for hepatitis-B acquiring epidemic proportions in the taluka. But it has now also been learnt that medical stores in Modasa have been selling medicines beyond their expiry dates or without a doctor”s prescription.

On Friday, food and drugs department authorities in the district carried out raids on medical stores, hotels and some food joints. The officials also inspected blood banks in Modasa for irregularities.
Sabarkantha district collector Ranjit Kumar said they were trying their best to bring the situation under control. “Five patients from
Modasa died today,” Kumar told DNA on Friday. “Officials have conducted raids and closed some clinics, eateries, drugstores and blood banks. Today, teams of healthcare officials collected around 100 samples of blood and serum for tests.”

Assistant health officer KG Nogia told DNA on Friday that they were taking strict steps to end medical malpractices in Modasa. “After inspecting equipment, clinics and doctors” qualifications, we are now raiding medical stores. Modasa has around 40 drugstores,” Nogia said. “Of the 20 medical stores that were inspected today, irregularities were detected at 16. We have sealed all the 16 drugstores.” he said.
