A photo exhibition by a Buddhist group aims for a paradigm shift in achieving peace.
The Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG), a Buddhist lay organisation, has organised a three-day photo exhibition Building a Culture of Peace for the Children of the World that is currently on at Kalina Campus of Mumbai University. An exhibit of 30 photo and text panels, it aims to map out a step-by-step process towards achieving world peace.
With the underlying philosophy that we must gradually shift from a ‘culture of violence’ that we currently live in to a ‘culture of peace’, the exhibition is based on thoughts and words of people the world over who have striven for peace, including those of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and current global Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda.
Santanu Choudhury who is one of the exhibition organisers from BSG says, “Establishing a culture of peace is essential today, if we are to find a way out of the complex problems of worldwide violence and human rights violations.” The exhibition endorses the view that ‘the culture of peace’ is a set of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups and nations.
Based on the philosophy of individual transformation through self-mastery, the organisation believes that individual choices of peace and non-violence can translate into a social network of like-minded individuals through continuous striving.
The exhibition which was attended by several city-based luminaries at its inauguration on Thurday, is on at the Marathi Bhasha Bhavan of the Kalina Campus during working hours till February 22. It has had showings in various parts of the world including the UN headquarters, Europe and also in New Delhi and Chennai.
