The Mumbai police have refused to believe that the two students, arrested in connection with kidnapping and murder of their college mate, had allegedly done it for money to buy board exam papers, saying there might be something more beyond this.

The victim, Mukim Khan, was hammered to death within two hours of his kidnapping on February 13 allegedly by two of his college mates. His body was found, on Monday night, in a decomposed state in a drain at suburban Kalina.

The two accused -- Amir Siddiqui Shaikh and Sarfaraz Shaikh -- were held on Tuesday.

Police Inspector of Khar, B Mukhedkar, said "It is more than what they are saying. During the interrogation they told us that they wanted Rs two lakh to bribe someone who could provide them with board exam papers."

"It's also true that they are weak in Mathematics subject and want to pass the exams. But we are unable to digest this theory," he said.

"If we believe what they are saying, then the question arises why they have killed Mukim before making an extortion call. Moreover, the hammer which was used to hit Mukim was brought by Amir from his house. It indicates that they already planned to kill Mukim," an officer said.

"We are still trying to figure it out what drove the two to kill Mukim and what is the exact motive behind the crime," the officer added.

Mukim's father Akbar Khan said on Wednesday his son was done away with in a brutal manner and the accused should be given death sentence.

The murder was a throwback to a similar case when Adnan Patrawala, the 16-year-old son of a businessman from Lokhandwala, was killed on August 19, 2007, by three youths who befriended him through the social networking site Orkut.

Sujith Nair (28), Ayush Bhat (19), and Khimmesh Ambavat (18), who confessed to killing Adnan by strangulating him, had demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore from Adnan's parents.

The trio panicked after the news of Adnan's abduction was aired on news channels and killed him deserting his body in the marshes of Navi Mumbai.
