The opposition party in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Friday proposed some more development works to be incorporated in the 2009-10 budget of the civic body.

The additional works, if accepted, would cost Rs36.93 crore to the AMC. While suggesting a reduction in the interest rate collected on unpaid property tax, leader of opposition in the AMC, Surendra Baxi of the Congress said the city lacked basic civic amenities.

The proposals by the opposition include a new general hospital for New West Zone, appointment of a deputy municipal commissioner for engineering department, allocating budget for the leader of opposition in the AMC, purchasing super sucker machines and CNG connections to all AMC-managed community halls and
party plots.

"At a time when citizens are reeling under an economic slowdown, the AMC should reduce interest rate on unpaid property tax. Current interest rate is 18% which is very high considering the fact that banks too have reduced interest rates. It should be brought down to 7%," Baxi said.

He said the proposed general hospital in the New West Zone would cater to residents of the newly-merged area besides people from the nearby villages. The opposition party also emphasised on better toilet facilities in slum areas, developing 132 feet ring roads like CG Road and a detailed survey of slums.

Withdrawal of entry fee to Kankaria lake also find place in one of the proposals. "We have been protesting against the entry fee and we will continue with it," Baxi said. Congress also proposed a grant to the leader of opposition in the AMC. "If the leader of opposition in the AMC is granted a fund, the money can be used in undertaking development works in areas where there are no representatives of the elected wing," Baxi added.
