In order to showcase the best of theatre that has been produced in India, the fourth Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) is being organised.

And this time, it's not only about encouraging all aspects of theatre-craft (like acting, set design, play-writing, light design, costume design, etc) but also about helping the girl child. Jay Shah, spokesperson, META, reveals, "Whatever proceeds we get from the tickets, we'll donate it to the Nanhi Kali Foundation."

This time around, the META festival will be held from February 28 to March 5, in New Delhi at Kamani Hall, Copernicus Marg or Sri Ram Center, Mandi House. And the most interesting part about this year's nominations is that out of the 10 plays nominated for the Best Production category, five are from Mumbai.

Swanand Kirkire's Aao Saathi Sapna Dekhein, Akarsh Khurana's Afsaneh -  Bai Se Bioscope Tak, Hidaayat Sami's All About Women, Rajat Kapoor's Hamlet - The Clown Prince and Manav Kaul's Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane. That apart, in the Best Actor-Female category, all the nominations are from the cast of All About Women and Afsaneh - Bai Se Bioscope Tak…so they are sure to bring back a minimum of one trophy at least!

The plays have also been nominated in categories such as Best Choreography, Best Actor-Male, Best Actor in a Supporting Role-Male, Best Actor in a Supporting Role-Female, Best Ensemble, Best Script, Best Director, Best Stage Design, Best Costume Design and Best Sound Design. The only category where we don't stand a chance is in the Best Lighting category because none of the Mumbai plays have been nominated. All the 10 plays will be staged between February 28 and March 5. The jury for the final selection is yet to be finalised.

The winners in each category will not only get a specially designed trophy, but also a cheque. The play that wins in the Best Production category will take home Rs1 lakh. The Best Original Playwright will win Rs75,000 and all the winners in the remaining categories will take home Rs35,000 each.
