SMC budget now Rs2,266 cr

The standing committee of the SMC on Thursday approved the budget for 2009-10 by making upward revision of the figure presented by the municipal commissioner.

After a two-day long discussion, the standing committee of the SMC on Thursday approved the budget for 2009-10 by making upward revision of the figure presented by the municipal commissioner. While municipal commissioner S Aparna on January 10 had proposed a budget of Rs2,134 crore, the standing committee revised it to Rs2,266 crore by adding Rs132 crore to it.

Various new projects and revenue expenses were added in the budget, while the capital income, including water charges, were reduced in the budget. The committee added various development projects like flyovers, bridges, multi-level parking, pay & park, art gallery and Imax theater. The revised budget will now be presented before the general board for passing.

The committee proposed hike in capital expenses from Rs1,216 crore to Rs1,284 crore, while revenue expense were increased from Rs839 crore to Rs904 crore. Ten flyovers, 11 bridges including seven rivulet bridges, protection wall, multi-level parking, fish market, art gallery and bicycle tracks were added in the revised budget.
Along with this, water charges for connections more than 0.5 inch was reduced by 50% and the slab was also increased in the revised budget. The charges from 0-30,000 litres were reduced from 3 paise liter to 1.5 paise litre, while charge above 30000 was decided 6 paise  liter from 12 paise litre. The committee also decided to go for PPP (Public Private Partnership) for maintaining city gardens.

Mukesh Dalal, chairman of standing committee, said that revised budget will help in pushing city’s development pace in old and newly merged areas of the city. The budget has been formulated with keeping in mind the needs of the city in coming ten years as per its population growth.

The committee also revised the budget for 2008-09 and reduced it by Rs107 crore making it Rs1,511 crore against municipal commissioner’s proposed budget of Rs1,680 crore for the year. The committee reduced the revenue and capital expenses by Rs59 crore and Rs48 crore, while increased the revenue income by Rs60 lakh and capital income by Rs12.5 crore.
