A 71-year-old Malaysian national on Wednesday has been sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for smuggling heroin to European countries from India.

The accused, Chandran Nair, smuggled the contraband drug for about a year. As per the case of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nair would get 400 Euros per trip apart from other expenses.

Nair was intercepted by DRI officials on March 26, 2005 in Mumbai airport with 3 kg of heroin.

As per his statement, Nair worked as a security officer in Malaysia before he started peddling drugs. In 2004, he met one Karunakaran who promised him 400 Euro per trip for smuggling drugs to European countries.

Before his arrest, he had delivered heroin at Paris in June 2004, Frankfurt in August 2004, Brussels in October 2004 and Amsterdam in October 2004 and January 2005.

Karunakaran would give Nair half the payment after Nair checked into a hotel in Mumbai. The other half of the payment was made by the person he delivered the drug to.

Nair flew down to Mumbai on March 25, 2005 and checked into a hotel room in Chembur. The next day  Karunakaran came to his room and gave him a bag with heroin concealed in its false bottom.
He was caught in the airport, while on his way to Malaysia via Dubai. Judge A Dhawale convicted and sentenced him.
