In a big relief to the Police commissioner, the Delhi High Court on Friday, softened its oral orders and withdrew summons against him to explain lapses in a matter related to alleged human trafficking of maids by placement agencies.

The court also granted him a week's time to take corrective steps in the case in which several juveniles have allegedly fallen prey to the trafficking mafia active in the capital.

Earlier on Friday morning, a Division Bench of chief justice AP Shah and justice Sanjeev Khanna, in an oral order, summoned the police chief to court on Wednesday.

But later, the court softened its stand and while issuing its written order in the evening granted a week's time to the police chief to take appropriate steps on the state counsel's request.

"We were inclined to summon commissioner of police and asked him to personally give directions and oversee the investigation in the present case. However, the counsel for Delhi Police has prayed for one week's time and stated that effective and proper step for investifgation...," the bench said in its written order.

The Bench came down heavily on the police for registering a case under section 406 of IPC (criminal breach of trust) only at Saraswati Vihar police station.

"They have not realised the sensitivity and efforts which have to be made to stem the crime related to exploitation of children and women," the bench said.

"Virtually no investigation has been done... the standard operating procedures prescribed by the Government of India have been given a complete go-bye. We are not satisfied with the status reports and steps taken by the police," the court said, seeking a fresh status report.
