Anyone who thinks Vijender Singh has lost his focus will be proved wrong. The Olympic bronze medal-winning boxer is set to return to the ring once again. He will be at the World Championship in Milan in August.

“I want to make a comeback on a big stage. Hence I’m targeting the Milan World Championship. I may compete in some meets abroad for preparations ahead of the August meet,” the Bhiwani pugilist told DNA in a one-on-one.

Vijender, who cheered the boxers here during the All India Super Cup, rubbished the talk of him giving up the sport for a career in films or modelling. “I know I can concentrate on my sport despite walking on the ramps and making appearances in the fashion world,” Vijender said.

Maintaining again that he is the same old Bhiwani boxer, Vijender said the Olympic success has not changed him. “I just want to make use of the fame I have got for boxing,” he pointed out. He felt that walking on the ramp will not at all affect his performance in the ring. “I want to come back stronger and help India prosper more in the sport,” he stated.

Vijender believes that Indian boxing has reached at a level from where it can go to another level. “Indian boxers have proved that they are no less by winning four medals in the World meet recently…Myself apart, there are others who are equally good and can bring honour for the country,” he said in one breathe.

He, however, praised the organisers for arranging a meet like Super Cup. “I competed in this meet last year and was adjudged the best boxer. This year some new talent would come up…that’s great for Indian boxing,” Vijender said. Summing up his thoughts, Vijender hoped the sport would get corporate assistance. “I hope sponsorships would come to the sport and young boxers would capitalise on that,”
Vijender signed off.
