Just a day before the BJP election committee finalises tickets for Lok Sabha polls, the party received a big jolt. Kalyan Singh, a sulking influential leader from Uttar Pradesh,  held parleys with archrival Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh on Sunday.

Kalyan, who is also the BJP vice-president, held discussions with Mulayam at an undisclosed location in Delhi for over an hour. SP general secretary Amar Singh was reportedly present at the meeting, where Kalyan openly criticised the BJP and expressed support for former vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Kalyan’s double standards have earned him the BJP’s wrath. The party may be forced to take action against him even if parting with Kalyan proves costly for them considering the former chief minister’s damage potential.

But the BJP hopes to substantially improve its tally from nine seats in Uttar Pradesh, which has most number of seats and is thus key to clinching power at the Centre.

The BJP’s gameplan for the state has, however, upset Kalyan. Kalyan is opposed to the BJP’s plans to tie up with Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal. He is also against the candidature of Ashok Pradhan from Bulandshahr, as Pradhan had engineered his son Rajbir’s defeat  from the Dibai assembly constituency in Bulandshahr in 2007.

Pradhan had worked against the BJP candidates in the previous assembly elections, he said.

Kalyan however, argues he does not want the “daaghis and baaghis” (tainted and rebels) to be fielded.

He is also irked at the manner in which two senior BJP leaders, Kalraj Mishra and Kesharinath Tripathi, are working against him.

Meanwhile, the Kalyan camp has questioned the BJP on why the party has refused to
accept Kalyan’s request for one seat.
