British prime minister Gordon Brown on Monday condemned as "unacceptable" the "Paki" remark that Prince Harry had made nearly three years ago against a young Army officer of Pakistani origin.

Brown told the British media that such "racially laden" terms should have "no place in our life" but added that the public would give Harry "the benefit of the doubt" because
he had now apologised.

"It was a mistake, he has made the admission of that and, once he has made his apology, I think the British people are good enough to give someone who has actually been a role model for young people... I think they will give him the benefit of doubt," the British prime minister said.

Meanwhile, the British Army has launched a probe into the issue, vowing to deal with the matter in line with "normal Army procedures", even though the young Pakistani officer has not yet lodged any formal complaint.

"The Army does not tolerate inappropriate behaviour in any shape or form," a Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told The Daily Telegraph

But, it is understood that Harry, an Army Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals division, is very much unlikely to face formal charges and could escape with a little more than a "dressing down" from his current Commanding Officer, the British daily said.

In fact, Prince Harry has already apologised for the "racist" remarks he had made three years ago against two of his colleagues, calling one of them a "Paki" and the other a "raghead".

Paki is a derogatory term for Indians and Pakistanis. When contacted, Clarence House said that Prince Harry "fully understands" how offensive the term he used was but it said that it had been "without malice".
