Hundreds of Bangladeshis allegedly staying illegally in Mumbai and neighbouring townships have been facing the heat in the last couple of months as the police, particularly the Special Branch (SB), have intensified their drive to flush out illegal immigrants after the 26/11 terror attacks.

Senior police officials say that the possibility of illegal immigrants giving logistical support in the terror attacks can not be ruled out. “Bangladesh-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jamaat-e-Islami’s (HuJI) role in attacks that have taken place in India also can’t be ruled out,” they said.

“We have created special teams to identify illegal immigrants and deport them,” said Sunil Ramanand, additional commissioner of police (SB).

After the terror strike, at least 500 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been nabbed and put behind bars in December. In the first week of January, at least 80 others were caught staying illegally in the city. Fourteen units have been formed to nab illegal immigrants.

“We have started carrying out regular checks in areas where Bangladeshi nationals are allegedly staying illegally,” said Naval Bajaj, SP (Thane Rural). Areas like Mira road, Bhayander and nearby areas have slum pockets where a large number of Bangladeshi nationals reside, police said.

Sources said that several Bangladeshis had reportedly fled the city after the 26/11 attacks. Post 26/11, police had received an intelligence tip-off that a few people from Bangladesh had sneaked into the country and were going to launch an attack in Delhi.

Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police from Zone -VI, said: “We have been conducting combing operations in all areas and it has helped us nab a large number of Bangla nationals allegedly living illegally in slum areas.”
