A 33-year old architect, who forged his school leaving certificate to procure a passport, has been arrested by the DB Marg police. The architect wanted to apply for a job in Dubai, the police claimed.

The arrested person has been identified as Sajid Rafiq Siddiqui, a resident of Kalyan Building at Grant Road.

According to the police, in July this year, Siddiqui submitted the required documents in the Passport Office. The papers went to the Special Branch office, which then sent them to DB Marg police station for verification.

“On checking the documents, it looked like the school leaving certificate of Siddiqui, which was submitted by him as age proof, was tempered with. Whitener and rubber were used to erase original details,” said police inspector Tanaji Surulkar of DB Marg police station.

Surulkar said the police did not inform Siddiqui that they had doubts about the details and started investigating the case. “In September, we went to NMT Academy from where Siddiqui had completed his matriculation. On checking the school records, it was learnt that Siddiqui was born in 1973, but the certificate submitted by him mentioned the year of his birth as 1978,” said Surulkar.

“We asked Siddiqui to provide more documents of his, such as the birth certificate and the Board certificate. But he never submitted them to us. We arrested him on December 23. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody till Monday,” said senior inspector NR Mali.

According to the police, Siddiqui confessed of forging the document. “He said that he wanted to go to Dubai. He saw an advertisement with a job vacancy in an architectural firm. The age criterion for the job was 26 years. But since he was 33 years of age, he decided to forge the document,” said police constable Jaysingh Singh.
